IEEE 1451.4 Smart Plug and Play Load Cells

Published on September 26, 2012 in Load Cells

Plug and play smart sensors are easy to use and they save both time and money. Transducer Techniques offers two plug and play meters that are compliant with the IEEE 1451.4 Standard: the Smart Plug & Play Digital Panel Mount Meter Model DPM-3 and the SmartPlug & Play Portable Hand Held Indicator Model SSI.

These smart plug and play meters offer a variety of current and planned benefits including:

  • Less time and money on set-up and teardown
  • Easier maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Greater safety as workers do not need to climb on equipment
  • Equipment self-calibrates automatically
  • The future system will have wireless connectivity with further reductions in installation and maintenance costs, and smart programming.

IEEE 1451.4 Standard compliance

The Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) is a listing of IEEE 1451.4 Standard data with specifications for sensor compliance. The data includes interface description, bridge type, sensitivity, excitation and other technical information.

TEDS information is available on an sensor-based EEPROM chip that makes this data readable to other compatible devices for fast identification and configuration. The TEDS system provides the plug and play capability of the DPM-3 and SSI models that saves users time and effort since the equipment automatically installs and calibrates.

Even older legacy sensors are convertible to TEDS plug and play capability via Transducer Techniques’ OPT-TEDS service. The service uses a AD9 (9 PIN “D” Series) Connector attached to the load cell or torque sensor cable. The connector has a TEDS EEPROM chip that works with the DPM-3 meter. With this update, legacy and non-TEDS sensors will be capable of plug and play with IEEE 1451.4 compliant equipment.

Model DPM-3 Plug and Play Meter

The DPM-3 is an IEEE 1451.4 compliant smart meter that allows for easy installation and calibration with TEDS compatible load cell and torque sensor equipment. The meter automatically calibrates using the TEDS data available on the sensors.

The meter is also compatible with non-TEDS load cells and torque sensors as the user can manually setup the meter using the front panel controls.

The meter is scalable to five digits and it has optional engineering units including ounces, pounds, grams and inch pounds. An optional analog meter is fast and it automatically adjusts the time constant to compensate for noise without compromising its response time to signal level changes.

Sampling speed is 60 readings per second or 50 RPS for a 50 Hz operation. There are eleven accessory options available for the DPM-3:

  • DPM-3-OPT-C Dual Relay
  • DPM-3-OPT-H Analog Output Board
  • DPM-3-OPT-T Serial Data Board (RS-232)
  • DPM-3-OPT-TRS485 Serial Data Board (RS-485)
  • DPM-3-OPT-V Low Voltage Power Supply
  • DPM-3-AD9 Adapter Connecto
  • DPM-3-RJ11AD9 RS232 Connector
  • DPM-3-PC6 6 Foot Power Cable
  • DPM-3-PC12 12 Foot Power Cable
  • DPM-3-TRES TEDS Reader_Editor Software
  • DPM-3-DLS TEDS Data Logging Software

Smart Plug and Play Portable Hand Held Indicator Model SSI

The SSI is a TEDS portable smart sensor indicator with plug and play capability with compliant equipment.

The meter automatically calibrates and it can also work with non-TEDS sensor equipment using the front panel push buttons. The SSI can convert units automatically for load, pressure and torque readings. Sampling rate is extremely fast at 15,360 samples per second for true peak and valley testing.

Users can connect the SSI to a computer using the RS-232 port for data logging. Additionally, data storage is available using the device’s internal memory, which can store up to 16,000 readings. The meter can operate up to 65 hours on a single battery charge and it can work off the battery charger when permanently mounted.

There are four accessory options available for the SSI:

  • SSI-RJ11AD9 — RS232 Connector
  • SSI-AMB — Adjustable Mounting Bracket
  • SSI-TRES — TEDS Reader Editor Software
  • SSI-DLS — Data Logging Software

DPM-3 TRES TEDS Reader Editor software

With this software, users are able to read and edit IEEE 1451.4 Standard compliant plug and play smart sensors. The TEDS setup provides information in standardized format so that other systems following the IEEE 1451.4 Standard can quickly read information for automatic configuration. With this software, it is possible to plug the DPM-3 to a computer via an RS-232 connection for reading and editing of the sensor’s EEPROM chip.

Transducer Techniques provides data on all its sensors to the Virtual TEDS database developed by National Instruments as an online library of data sheets that contain the same information used for TEDS EEPROM sensors. The library allows legacy and non-TEDS sensors to convert to plug & play capability.

Conclusion

The DPM-3 Panel Mount Meter and the SSI Hand Held Indicator for load cells and torque sensors provide plug and play capability that saves users time, energy and money.

These smart meters automatically install and calibrate when using compatible sensors. They are easier to maintain and troubleshoot. The systems will also incorporate wireless technology in the future for remote operation without analog cables. These improvements will further cut down on set-up and teardown times.

Both models come in a range of options and the DPM-3 allows the user to read and edit the data sheet on the sensor’s EEPROM chip. The SSI can connect to a PC for data logging and it has internal memory storage capable of handling up to 8,000 date and time stamped readings. The meters are valuable tools for improving workflow and optimizing return on investment by reducing installation and maintenance costs.
